In today’s cost-conscious corporate environment, businesses are constantly seeking ways to streamline operations and cut costs, while maintaining strict performance requirements. Keeping these key needs in mind, Lenovo designed the affordable, storage-rich RD240. Powered by the latest Intel® Xeon® processors with up to 12 CPU cores, the RD240 offers up to 60% faster performance than previous generation servers.

The RD240 is a smart choice for businesses that look for cost-effective alternative storage solutions, while maintaining high levels of data protection. With several levels of advanced data protection, inducing RAID data cache and available battery backup and up to 16TB low-cost storage, the RD240 is well-suited to meet the storage needs of growing enterprises.

Overall, the RD240 is power-packed for performance and scalability. With many industry-leading features bundled in a compact rack model at a great value, the RD240 significantly lowers Total Cost of Ownership (TCO), while providing the tools to power most business server applications and solutions

L4 Networks Configuration of the RD240D

L4 Networks has been building and installing servers since our beginnings in 1987. We really like the Lenovo brand because they mirror the quality parts which we use in our own Intel based servers. We also understand that many people are not comfortable buying a "white box" server which is another reason why we offer the Lenovo line. But buying a server and configuring it to work for your environment and applications can be a daunting task. That is where we come in. We have developed several "typical" deployment scenarios that we see in small business environments and configured servers to mach those needs. These are what you will see on this site. For larger enterprise systems, please call use to discuss your needs as we build systems for all sizes.

Now to be sure there are many other configurations that are possible and we simply cannot cover every one of them here. If you wish to discuss your applications and have us a design a Lenovo server tuned your specific needs, we can do this also. Remember please, we are not box pushers. We install, support, and optionally manage all systems we sell. Contact us.

This Server

This is server is designed for the office with for the number of users specified at the top "As Built Configuration At-a-Glance". We assumed and average office worker running a typical office suite, several browser sessions and one small custom application. Sizing virtual desktops is complex we always recommend that you contact us so we can learn about your environment, applications, and usage patterns. We this information we can more finely tune the cpu, memory and storage requirements.

What is Desktop Virtualization

Simply stated, it is the practice of hosting a desktop operating system on a centralized or remote server instead of on the user's personal workstation. Many companies are using this technology to save costs, increase security, and enable remote workers. The key point is that the "virtualized" desktop lives on a central server, instead of on the local storage of a remote client machine. When users work from their local machine (whether it is a typical PC, laptop, or thin client device), all of the programs, applications, processes, and data used are stored on the central server and all programs are run centrally on that same server. This allows users to run operating system and execute applications from numerous devices (smart phones, tablets, thin clients) with a variety of operating systems. Learn more.

Why are the benefits of a Virtual Desktop?

Having a virtual desktop server will allow you to eliminate desktop workstations and pcs. One of the biggest IT expenses in any organization is desktop support. When an organization virtualizes the desktop on a private cloud system they can also eliminate the PC based desktops and replace them with secure and user incorruptible thin client devices. Security concerns & costs are also lessened as PC desktops can be locked them down so their only function is to access the server. It also eliminates costly workstation licenses and severely limits the leaking of sensitive data from end user devices. Small Business Private Cloud Case Study.

NO PC?

nopc-wyse

Yes! No PC! No kidding. Using thin client devices from companies such as Wyse, you eliminate the bulky workstation and laptops that forever need updating and maintenance. But don't take our word for it, here are two articles on the subject, one from Forbes and the other from the Wall Street Journal. To see our line up of Wyse products, click here.

What do with old PCs?

For many organizations, investing in, managing and supporting a business PC network infrastructure has become unsustainable. And it’s this existing investment in thousands of PCs that - in the long term - prevents a move to more affordable cost-effective thin clients and an easier to manage virtualized computing environment. Wyse PC Extender resolves this issue by extending the life of legacy PC 'capital assets' as reconfigured and fully-optimized thin clients, which in turn, also eliminates expensive support and management costs. With Wyse PC Extender, organizations can now access the benefits of a secure, cost effective virtualized computing environment today, with a seamless PC-to-thin client transition strategy in place for tomorrow. Bare Bones

This server is also available in a "Bare Bones" configuration with/without hard drives; with/without operating system; with/without CPU.

If want external storage, we have several iSCSI solutions from which to choose such as the fine QNAP NAS product line. Contact us for details.

VMware ESXi

We have built several machines on the open source VMware ESXi virtual machine software platform. For small businesses this is a powerful option as several virtual servers can be hosted on one physical machine. Example: A mid size insurance agency customer has one of our VMware machines running the 5 virtual servers of MS Server 2008 Terminal Services, MS Server 2003 for legacy applications, Windows XP for an accounting application, MS Server 2008 for Active Directory, and a Linux server for remote access key management. All this runs on one platform. We completely automated the backup for them so their operation is 100% lights out. By the way, this is the second private cloud system we built for them. The first one was in service 5 years and was only replaced because they out grew it. Even after 5 years this system still runs on their network performing file server duties. We provide complete server management for this agency and you may speak with them if you wish.

Installation & Configuration

Our MS Certified engineers can install any server roles options on the server that you desire. This may include DNS, DHCP, IIS, Active Directory, Terminal Services, etc. We can also install and integrate your business applications by working with you and/or your software vendor.

Remote Management

All L4 Networks networks server come with an Intel remote management module which allows us board level management access. For windows servers, we additionally configure them for remote administration. For Linux, we configure them for SSH remote access.

Managed Services

We provide complete remote management of your server. To be honest, the field record for our servers is phenomenal and once setup and configured, they require little maintenance other than the normal vendor software patches and user adds and changes. Our services are customizable and can include patch management, server load monitoring, anti-malware monitoring, backup management, change management and other items specific to your business needs.

Warranty

Lenovo Warranty Services provide extended service terms to match your depreciation schedule or planned refresh cycle and upgrades to onsite support and, in some cases, same day support. This server is configured with the ThinkPlus Priority Support built in for 3 years. A five year plan is also available. ThinkPlus Priority Support is a single, consolidated service plan that provides fast access to advanced tech support, helping customers save time and improve overall productivity. With ThinkPlus Priority Support, you get the benefits of tech-to tech
