Sophos Cyberoam Bundle Options Explained

Term Summary: "Total Value" vs. "Security Value" The primary difference between the "Total Value" and the "Security Value" is in the anti-spam engines.Cyberoam License L4 Networks

Term Summary: "PLUS" You will see Total Value Plus and Security Value Plus. Plus means 24x7 support from Cyberoam. Regular (with without "Plus") is 8x5 support from Cyberoam.

Term Summary: "Comprehensive Value" vs. "Total Value" The primary difference between the "Comprehensive Value" includes all of the Total Value plus WAF (Web Application Firewall) and 24 x7 support.

1) Real-time Anti-Spam protection with "Total Value" & "Total Value Plus" Subscription

The Total Value Subscription includes the spam-Defense technology from Cyren (formerly Commtouch) integrating Cyren Recurrent Pattern Detection(TM) (RPD) solutions which into Cyberoam's UTM solutions.

Cyren real-time, fully-automated messaging security solutions are based on Recurrent Pattern Detection (RPD™) and GlobalView™ technologies to block spam, phishing and malware, enabling service providers and security vendors to reduce costs, attract new customers and enhance their competitive offerings.

Cyren global detection centers analyze more than two billion Internet transactions per day, providing visibility into network traffic in every location around the world. This critical mass of data is analyzed using Cyren's patented RPD technology, enabling the real-time delivery of IP address classification. GlobalView determines if a particular address is sending spam and/or legitimate email, and if it has been compromised into a zombie. These capabilities enable the GlobalView service to block distributed attacks the moment they start.

Most spam outbreaks are from 'botnets'1 that send the message from multiple sources to multiple destinations. The RDP monitors this in real time and when it identifies an outbreak it immediately flags it ands updates it system. All subscribers therefore have immediate protect ion. Contrast this to a 'scoring' system that actually scans the headers and body of each email for 'known' spam words and patterns. This is not always accurate, results in false negatives and false positives and also increases the load on the mail server.

2) Spam Protection with Security Value & Security Value Plus Subscription

This is based on Real Time Black (RBL) lists that are continually update from various RBL providers. A Real-time Blackhole List is a list of the IP addresses of known spammers. This is not a paid service but uses publicly available RBL lists. Note, this feature is native to the base product so therefore it is also present on the Total Values bundles.

NOTE: If Anti Spam module is not subscribed, Cyberoam will detect spam mails based on RBL only and not on recurrent patterns in mails using Cyren engine.

3) Antivirus Engine: In both Total Value and Security Value subscriptions, from firmware version 10.6.2 onwards, Cyberoam uses the Sophos antivirus scanning engine.

5) L4 Networks Recommendation

If you have your own mail server within your enterprise, then the Total Value Subscription Plus is the best choice. Even if it is hosted externally, then the Total Value Subscription Plus or the Total Value Subscription is a still better value in terms of spam features.

6) Non Bundled Options

If you do not wish to have any subscriptions and want a bare bone firewall, then choose the Non Bundled option. Here you really have only two choices: 8x5 support or 24x7 support. All support is from Cyberoam. It also includes all firmware updates and equally as important, the warranty extension for the term of the contract. 7) Terms

Except for EOL (end of life) products, subscriptions are available in 1, 2, or 3 year terms.

1 A botnet is a number of Internet connected computers that, although their owners are unaware of it, have been set up to forward transmissions (including spam or viruses) to other computers on the Internet. Any such computer is referred to as a zombie - in effect, a computer "robot" or "bot" that serves the wishes of some master spam or virus originator. Most computers compromised in this way are home-based. According to a report from Russian-based Kaspersky Labs, botnets -- not spam, viruses, or worms -- currently pose the biggest threat to the Internet. A report from Symantec came to a similar conclusion. (Source: Searchsecurity.techtarget.com)
